Visiting Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Ms. Christine Lagarde gave US$15,000 to Premium African Youth Development Platform, an NGO that addresses the welfare of female head porters at the Agblogbloshie Market in Accra.

The gift would be used to support basic education and legal literacy, nutrition education and general well-being matters.

Ms. Lagarde explained that, prior to her visit, she did not know about the gravity of the kayayei problem, but that she had come to learn more about it. She observed that a combination of formal and informal education was necessary for the girls and young women to escape from the grip of poverty.

She praised Mrs. Aku Hornam Kevi, Executive Director of the NGO for extracting herself from poverty and a bleak future by taking up education and becoming who she was today.

The NGO expects to reach some 10,000 marginalised and impoverished females with its programming in 2019.
