The GNPC Foundation refurbished an old soccer pitch in Enyinase in Ellembelle District of the Western Region, and transformed the old facility into an modern artificial turf fitted with floodlights and other amenities. The renovation was completed was undertaken by Waste 360 Ltd at a project cost of USD300,000, which was funded by GNPC Foundation. The facility will enable Karela Football Club enhance its performance.
In remarks at the commissioning of the refurbished facility, CEO of GNPC Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong noted that the investment provided strategic value in helping develop local talents with further potential to transform soccer in Ghana. Dr. Koduah added that the investment had corporate branding and advertising value as well. He announced that GNPC was working with Ghana Gas Company Limited to provide a three-year sponsorship package for Karela FC and provide facilities for the Youth Academy of the club.
Executive Director of GNPC Foundation Dr. Dominic Eduah described the investment as an important tool in in the economic empowerment of young people in the Nzema areas and the communities within in the oil and gas enclave. Dr. Eduah explained that sports infrastructure was an important tool in economic empowerment, which was why GNPC Foundation was funding the construction of 30 astroturf facilities across Ghana.
Senior Minister Mr. Osafo Marfo expressed confidence in the future of Karela FC and encouraged the team to live up to the expectations of its sponsors and patrons. He emphasized the importance of discipline and training as the path to become one of Ghana’s greatest soccer clubs. District Chief Executive for Ellembelle Mr. Kwasi Bonzo urged the club and the Local Assembly to ensure a good maintenance schedule for the facility.
