Gold Fields Ghana, Tarkwa Mine, working through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, donated a brand new, fully equipped ambulance worth US$35,000.00 (about GHC2000,000.00) to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa in Ghana’s Western Region. The donation event was held to mark World Health Day 2021 on the campus of UMaT. Gold Fields Ghana provided the ambulance in response to a request for assistance submitted by the university.

Mr. Alfred Baku, Executive Vice-President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa, noted that investment in health and healthcare was on f the key avenues that Gold Fields Ghana shared value with the company’s host communities. Mr. Baku said it was important for the university to have the capacity to provide emergency transportation of individuals to hospitals, and that the fully equipped ambulance will serve that purpose. He challenged the university to to ensure proper maintenance of the ambulance.

Mr. Baku added that Gold Fields was committed to quality healthcare for its employees and members of host communities.

The Vice Chancellor of University of Mines and Technology Prof. Richard K. Amankwah received the ambulance and expressed the university’s gratitude to Gold Fields Ghana Foundation. Prof. Amankwah said the ambulance had come in at the right time to support the delivery of healthcare. He assured the donor that the University would take diligent care of the ambulance.

Gold Fields and UMaT have developed strong ties over the years through partnership in talent and industry development. Gold Fields and the Mining industry in Ghana rely on UMaT for professionals needed to fill critical roles in the mining industry. UMaT also assists the Mining sector with scientific research, which translates into technical advice and recommendations for best practices in mining and minerals processing. Mr. Baku reiterated that Gold Fields and UMaT will continue to work together in mutually beneficial partnerships.
