Just Because Fitness (JBF) committed $8000 in support for Ghana’s women relay team at the World Relay Championships in Yokohama. The funding will help cover expenses of four athletes competing in the championships.
The women’s 4x100m relay team includes Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Persis William Mensah, Gemma Acheampong and Hor Halutie. The team will be working to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Doha later this year when they participate in the World Relays in Japan from May 11 to May 12.
The donation comes as welcome news for the Ghana Athletics Association, which has been struggling to raise funds to sponsor the women’s participation in the championships after they received no support from government.
Programs Director of JBF Ms. Sara Asafu-Adjaye said sports is great avenue for girls, boys women and men to realize their full potential and any support we are able to provide help set athletes on the right path to success. Ms. Asafu-Adjaye noted that athletics often attracts little support from government, which is why JBF stepped up and reached out to some benevolent donors.
Ms. Asafu-Adjaye mentioned the following and commended them for their generous contributions: Eliza Olympio of JamRock Restaurant, Dedo Kofi of Adeko Ltd, Lina Sowah of Tullow Oil, US-based Gretchen Bauer and Kathy Stark.
