The Rotary Club of Sunyani-Central donated $73,063 worth of medical equipment to 13 healthcare facilities in the Bono and Ashanti Regions of Ghana. The donation was part of the Club’s goals of supporting the delivery of healthcare, notably maternal and pediatric healthcare in local communities.  The donated equipment, which were presented to beneficiaries at the 3rd Battalion of Infantry (3BN) at Sunyani included:

  • 50 warmers
  • 178 baby suction devices
  • Defibrillator
  • Cardiac monitor
  • Autoclave
  • Nebuliser
  • 5 hospital beds
  • 5 wheelchairs
  • ECG machine, and
  • Delivery bed
  • Suction machine
  • Microscope
  • Dental chair, and
  • 34 packets of exam gloves

President of Rotary Club of Sunyani-Central Mr. Johnson Mawuli Tsagli-Awor explained that the club mobilized funds for the equipment through the Rotary Foundation Global Grant GG 2096430. The equipment were purchased following a needs assessment conducted by the club to determine the different needs of the beneficiary healthcare facilities. The club identified the provision of maternal healthcare as a notable challenge because important equipment were lacking, Mr. Tsagli-Awor noted.

Rotarian Tsagli-Awor said the club was motivated by its Rotarian promise ‘Service above Self’ and by the clubs own theme for 2021 ‘Serve to change lives.’ He hoped the club’s “widow’s mite” would contribute to saving precious lives of healthcare seekers and help reduce the are of maternal and infant deaths in the region.

Rotarian Tsagli-Awor urged beneficiary health facilities to ensure diligent use and maintenance of the equipment provided to enable the equipment run their full life course and serve their intended purposes. This was also important to encourage other Rotary clubs to do more to support healthcare institutions. Rotarian Tsagli-Awor affirmed the commitment of the Rotary Club of Sunyani-Central to collaborate with its partners to serve humanity in the areas of health, education and sanitation.

  • Watchman CHPS – Sunyani and
  • Trinity Hospital – Kumasi.

Speaking on behalf of the 3 Medical Reception Station at 3 Garrison, Commanding Officer of the Armour Training School Lt Col Dominic Buah commended the Rotary Club of Sunyani-Central for the support and promised diligent care and maintenance of the equipment in anticipation of more donations. Lt Col Buah underlined the need for beneficiary institutions to manage the limited equipment provided to them by government and benevolent clubs such as Rotary.

Nurse Manager at Sunyani Municipal Hospital Mrs. Mercy Fordjor and Principal Physical Assistant at Abesim Health Center Mrs. Belinda Annan Mettle thanked Rotary Club of Sunyani-Central for their continuous support of healthcare in the region. Mrs. Fordjor appealed for incubatorscontinuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and pulse oximeter to help boost care of newborn babies. Mrs. Mettle appealed for more medical assistance and a borehole for the Educational CHPs zone at Abesim to address sanitation challenges.
