West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) sponsored free eye care outreach for over 1,000 residents  from Inchaban, Aboadze, Abuesi, Dwomo and Shama in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Shama District.

Participants were given free medication and eye glasses. They were also educated about preventive practices for different eye diseases.

Dr. Gladys Fordjour, Ophthalmologist with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital noted that cataracts were the most prevailing disease.

External Relations Manager of WAPCo Mark K. Mensah said the the named communities house the company’s pipeline onshore. He noted that it came to WAPCo’s attention that eye-care was was a critical need and that most of the clinics in these communities are did not provide specialized care.

The outreach was meant to address the need and is part of the WAPCo’s corporate social responsibility. Other communities in Tema, Kpone and Accra have also benefited from the company’s outreach.
