Yinson Ghana provided a 5KW off-grid rooftop solar system for Preatsir-Awunakrom M.A. Basic School in Ghana’s Western Region. Yinson also provided lights and ceiling fans for the school’s classroom, washroom lights, 20 security lights for the perimeters, a refrigerator and fire extinguishers every classroom block.

The corporate intervention was a major development for Preatsir-Awunakrom M.A. Basic School, which had been without access to power supply for 37 years of its existing, making it difficult to students to study ICT, science, vocational subjects and other subjects. Teachers and students endured hot temperatures and poorly-lighted classrooms during classess.

This initiative aligns with Yinson’s CSR mission of promoting quality education, and a broader focus on contributing to the global transition towards a sustainable energy system. Mr. Edward Mensah, Corporate Social Responsibility Officer of Yinson said the company became aware of the needs of Preatsir-Awunakrom M.A. Basic School in 2019 when the company was identifying schools in need of laptops. Mr. Mensah noted that the focus of assistance shifted when it became clear that Preatsir-Awunakrom M.A. Basic School did not even have access to power supply.

“The students can now use the classrooms for evening classes, and we hope that the ceiling fans will provide comfort in the classrooms for both students and teachers,” Mr. Mensah added.

Mr. Mark Adoba Adatekey, the Municipal Director of Education commissioned the system officially and commended Yinson Ghana for the assistance provided. Mr. Adatekey remarked that education was as everybody’s business. He urged the school to maximize the use of solar energy to enhance ICT and science education in the municipality.
